I graduated in 2016 from the BFA Musical Theatre program. Excellent program with skilled professors. Small class sizes giving you plenty of time to learn your craft. You will be taking majority theatre and music classes, and be doing your academic requirements for the University during your first and second year. The social life is unbeatable. Plenty of places to go in Miami, and the best city to be in during college.

University of Miami is the ultimate party school. Campus life is all that one could ask for. Greek life is huge here, and we live for the sports! Classes are rigorous, and there are tons of resources on campus for students. However, professors could do a better job with communication, office hours, and submitting grades before the end of the semester.

After my recent visit to the University of Miami, I was really impressed by how vibrant and dynamic the campus feels. Located in Coral Gables, the area is beautiful, offering easy access to numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops, giving it a city campus vibe rather than just a university. The campus itself is well-maintained, and the facilities are top-notch, particularly the Herbert Wellness Center, which I can imagine would be amazing to use regularly. I had the chance to visit the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall during a school field trip to attend a concert from the Frost School of Music's Frost Music Live series, and the performance was incredible—one I’ll always cherish. I’m looking forward to attending future concerts there. The dining options on campus are solid, with a good variety available. However, it’s also convenient to pop over to the nearby restaurants if you’re in the mood for something different. The dorms were decent—definitely social, but some buildings felt a bit outdated compared to others. The cost of living on campus, though, doesn’t seem worth it. On the bright side, off-campus housing options in Coral Gables and Coconut Grove are appealing, though a bit pricey—especially near campus. Still, they’re generally more affordable than on-campus options. The student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1 is a huge plus, allowing for more personalized attention from professors if I do attend this school. Overall, UM offers a great balance of academics, social life, and location, especially for those who enjoy an active, urban lifestyle. It’s definitely a place to consider, but the higher living costs compared to other Florida schools should be carefully planned for.

This is my dream institution. I always wanted to attend this school. It is very diverse—it’s a melting pot. There are various clubs and events. There are also many things to do outside of the campus such as going to the beach or eating at nice restaurants. University of Miami is the best! It is all about the U!

University of Miami FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at University of Miami?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for University of Miami is 37%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020, _____ students were offered admission.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The first piece of advise I would give myself is to be as outgoing as possible. Going to a college where I didn't know anyone was a bit of a tough transition at first. Friends are what make college the amazing experience that it should be. They help you through the hard times and create the good times with you. Without those relationships college would be almost impossible to handle. The other thing that I would tell myself is to always stay focused on the reason that I'm in college. It's so easy to lose sight of the fact that I'm there to get an education and learn as much as I can to help me become successful. School should come first most of the time. Otherwise I'm paying for a very expensive party. I would tell myself to not look around at other people that are doing as little work as possible to get by but to always remember that that's not the kind of person I want to be. I want to go above and beyond what I'm asked of so that I can make the most out of college!

  4. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

For me, the worst thing about my school is that it's so far from my home. This makes it hard because I'm away from my family and friends for the majority of the year. It was hard to start over making all new friends. But I have made new friends, and overall, it's been worth it. The other thing that's hard is the cost. I have a full-tuition scholarship, but I still have to take out student loans, and I'm worried about the amount of debt I'll be in when I graduate.

  5. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I had known that I was going to end up changing majors anyway. Then I would've gone to a school based on academics, rather than based on music.

  6. Describe your favorite campus traditions.

Our school is best know for its football team. While they don't always win they do have a history of being an amazing team. The students have a lot of school spirit and love attending games. And everyone has heard of the "U" when it comes to sports!

  8. What's unique about your campus?

One of the university's strong points is the general willingness of professors to allow students to conduct research in their labs. I have been able to work in three different labs during my fours years at the University of Miami and have gained invaluable experience in each lab. Academic advisors often help students with obtaining a place in a lab by recommending researchers with similar interests to the student and by informing students of research opportunities.

  12. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

The campus is beautiful. We are in such a beautiful part of the country that is never cold and is always beautiful and sunny. Even when it is raining, such as now due to the tropical storm in the area, the rain is warm and misty, it is simply beautiful. The beach is not far away, and fun is never not to be had. Also, the people around you in the classes are genuinely interested in learning.

  14. What are the academics like at your school?

Your lower levels courses will be a mixed bag. ENG112 with Flores is CAKE, but FIN302 with Bernille is being MASOCHISTIC. Don't take BSL212 with Abril, she's too hot for you to pay attention to! The students are all expected to contribute to the class and professors try to get to know you personally. Depending on who you associate yourself with, your conversations will vary. Personally, as comfortable debating the merits of Marx or the writing of Voltaire, as I am recalling keg stands at the SigEp parties. If your a go-getter, get ready for competition. The students in the School of Business administration are extremely proud of thweir achievements and hungry for recognition. A Miami degree is geared towards entry into the workforce. Professors all have meningful experience in relations to their subjects and can offer some insight, when asked. The Toppel Career center tries to place students into lucrative and challenging jobs, so don't be surprised if the guy with the A in your Statistics or Economics class works for Goldman Sachs...

  16. What is your overall opinion of this school?

The best thing about Miami...where to start...we can talk about the world class professors (Dean of the the School of Business, taught at Wharton), we can talk about the broad academic options, the endless amount of student organizations, the beautiful campus in the heart of affluent Coral Gables, the diverse student body, the storied athletic program, it's all there! When you tell and employer or even someone you just met you're a Miami student, you can notice a slight change. Employers are impressed and people ask whether you're rich or smart. Although few can claim the first, almost all Miami students can claim the latter. Studying at Miami allows you to mix academics, with a WORLD CLASS PARTY SCENE! SoBe and the Grove are minutes away! It's not really a college town and people are always on the move in Miami, there's just so much to do. One thing though...get ready for the traffic...there is over 10 million registered vehicles in Miami-Dade County. If you want to stay on campus, there's the Cosford cinema, events at the Rock, and for the sports-junkies, get your fix at the Rat. For the adventurous...sex in the Stacks if you can manage it will grant you entry into a very exclusive club. Everyone is proud to be a Miami Hurricane, and when the football picks up, we'll be back with a vengeance! R.I.P.: Kelly Anne Jones!

  18. Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

They could not be further from the truth! When I took my campus tour and meet with current students I was impressed. I don't know about the other schools but the students from the School of Business are all driven. I know people who speak five languagues, some who hold patents, some that go Europe to intern for DLA Piper, Deloitte, and the British House of Commons. I am not going to lie, there's nothing like a weekend in Miami, but UM students play hard and work HARDER!

  19. What is the stereotype of students at your school?

The biggest stereotype about UMiami is that all of the students are rich and overly materialistic. Yes, this is true of some students here, but I think it would be impossible to find a school where there are not some students like that.

  21. Tell us about the sports scene on campus.

On the inside.. can't you see?? I wish I could say that the 'Canes are back in action, but sadly we're not doing so well right now. However, the silver lining is that any game lost was only by a few points, but thats also something to cry over. Club, Intermural, and Intramural sports are all highly participated in, in addition to varsity sports! The club sports here travel to nationals annually.
